Walking Routes

The area encompassing Kennebunkport and neighboring Lower Village Kennebunk is a very walk-able area. Visitors enjoy strolling the streets and lanes, popping into shops, browsing galleries and enjoying an ice cream or a coffee. Kennebunk and Kennebunkport’s shops specialize in everything from ladies’ apparel and children’s toys to nautical gifts and home décor. There is even a pet boutique! While strolling, be sure to cross the Mathew J. Lanigan Bridge, which spans the Kennebunk River and connects Kennebunkport and Lower Village Kennebunk. Take time to stop enjoy the beautiful vistas from the bridge and watch the boats heading out of the harbor.

A short walk from Kennebunkport, nestled among the trees along the Kennebunk River is the Franciscan Monastery. Originally a private home, the estate has been home to the Lithuanian Franciscan monks since 1947. Take a self-guided stroll on the tranquil 66-acre grounds to admire beautiful gardens, authentic woodlands and peaceful outdoor chapels.

Kennebunkport Historical Society

The Kennebunkport Historical Society offers two walking tours: one of the historic village (Dock Square and the surrounding streets) and one through the stately Cape Arundel area, a mile or so from Dock Square. These fascinating historical tours, which outline Kennebunkport’s maritime and tourist history, begin at the First Families Kennebunkport Museum at White Columns, which is located just outside Dock Square and is open from July through Columbus Day and again during Christmas Prelude. Maine Foodie Tours

Maine Foodie Tours offers a leisurely half-mile tour from Dock Square Kennebunkport over the bridge to Lower Village Kennebunk. The town outlines the culinary history of the area, including highlighting several world-renowned chefs. The tour includes stops at 7-8 different food establishments for tastes and treats.
