Coastal Maine Botanical Garden & Freeport

Discover the waterside gardens of the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens followed by a stop in the village of Freeport best known for its upscale outlet shopping and as home to the world-famous L.L.Bean.

From the pier, depart Portland and take the highway north to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay Harbor. Opened in 2007 after 16 years of planning and researching a prime location, the expansive complex of waterside gardens is a treasure to be explored. The natural habitat has been gently grown into a manicured state with pathways through the mossy forest featuring gardens with different themes and flowers, plus an alley of more than 1,000 birch trees. Throughout, the walks are quiet and lush. One of the best trails runs along much of the tidal shoreline that’s part of the property. Your visit here is just under two hours; the first hour is lead by a docent of the gardens, followed by another 45-minutes of your own exploration and browsing the gift shop. At the conclusion of your visit, regroup for the departure to Freeport.

Internationally recognized as a world-class shopping destination, Freeport offers over 200 upscale outlets, designer shops and eclectic boutiques. But, Freeport isn’t all about shopping. Take in a tour of the historic sites in this village established in the 1700s and stop by the Freeport Historical Society’s annual exhibit, housed in the Harrington House on Main Street just a block from L.L.Bean. Two hours are afforded here to browse the many shops and have lunch. At the appointed time reboard the coach and return to the pier.
